ALC TO FLY WITH WINGS

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

Each year, young girls from middle and high schools are invited to fly with Delta on an entirely female-operated flight, from the ramp agents to pilots to dispatchers. On October 5th, The ALC has the honor of being chosen as one of the 6 schools involved in the 5th annual Women Inspiring Our Next Generation Flight.(WING)

There will be 20 girls from the ALC, along with Mrs.Hair and Ms. Wilson who will be representing the ALC on this annual flight.

The students will be boarding a Delta flight and will be flown to Houston to the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base and from there taken to the Johnson Space Center where they will spend the day engaged in many STEM-related activities and then fly home that evening.

The schools being honored with this opportunity are The Advanced Learning Center, Bryant Middle School, Granite Technical School, Jordan Technical School, Karl G Maesar Prep Academy, Salt Lake Center For Science Education.

The WING Flight gives girls an opportunity to put themselves in the shoes of traditionally male roles. Last year's flight was also joined by female mechanics, engineers, technicians, and IT specialists.

Delta created the WING flight to attract women to the aviation and aerospace fields. From the flight crew, pilots, gate agents—and even flight dispatchers—the flight was entirely female. The WING flight gives girls a chance to see themselves in traditionally male-dominated roles.

The WING flight originated as a response to the lack of female pilots —

only 5.14 percent of pilots in the United States are female.

HUGE SHOUT OUT TO MR. HALLS, ALC's AVIATION TEACHER AND AMY MONSON, GRANITE's AVIATION TEACHER FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE!

More pictures of their actual trip to come after the 5th.
