Jr. High Code Girl day at ALC

400 Jr. High girls from 7 schools in the Nebo school district took part in the "Hour of Code" challenge by participating in Code Girl Day at the ALC.  Students arrived by bus and were greeted by female ALC students who  helped plan for this event.  Event coordinator, Khristen Massic, an enigneering teacher at the ALC, was excited to host an event that exposed girls to computer programming.  "I have always been an advocate for getting girls interested in STEM careers. When I watched CodeGirl for the first time, I felt that it would be a great way to get junior high school girls excited about computer science. Many girls are interested in STEM-related career options in elementary and junior high school, but somehow lose interest while in high school. An all-girl event like this one is meant to keep girls interested in those careers."

Girls had the oppotunity to write code on Code.Org and Made with Code and view the first 40 minutes of the Documentary 'CodeGirl".  The girls left with a thank you gift and were asked to share hour of code with friends and family.  You can find more information about learning to code at http://alc.nebo.edu/content/hour-code.
