Braden Jensen and Braeden Watson, in ALC’s Computer Programming classes, designed and programmed a client server application for MMHS’s dramatic presentation of “The Pirates of Penzance”. The application allowed the Sound Director and Soundboard Operator in the MMHS Tech Center (the Loft) to communicate with the Microphone Technician backstage, Braden Jensen. Breadon Watson programmed the Client Server; then Braden Jensen created everything else in the application. A local network the students created and existing local IP addresses allowed the computers to communicate with each other. The sound director consistently checked microphone receivers for battery levels and signal strength, then recorded this information in the battery columns of the application. Viewing the information entered on the application, the Microphone Technician used the information making any necessary adjustments backstage.

This is a tremendous upgrade from last year’s use of Excel and Splashtop which mirrored the two computer screens. Braden said, “We needed a way to just look at a screen, determine if there was a problem, and fix it, like battery needs and turning mics on and off.” This program helped all sound personnel efficiently keep track of and communicate microphone needs from both locations. The MMHS Microphone Tracker program is still under development and will be adjusted for use in various shows.
