Social Entrepreneurship In Action!

Congratulations to our two students, Clayton Giles and Jarett Rogers, both of Salem Hills High School, for being selected in the Youth Entrepreneurs Phoenix Rising Pitch Competition.  Mrs. Ewell's Business & Media Production Capstone students were invited to submit ideas to help teens find support and positivity in response to Utah's growing opioid epidemic.

Students were asked to create a brief pitch deck and video describing their solutions which involved addressing problems now to avoid the lifelong negative effects of addiction.  Students were directed to address unhealthy causation and changing the students lens of thought through human centered design.  Specifically The Phoenix, a rehabilitation organization, was looking to address:

  • How can The Phoenix partner with high schools

  • Possible systemic approaches to reaching out to teens

  • Problems to overcome to provide much needed support to teens

  • Programs that could be created within a high school/community setting

Sponsored by American Fork High School, Youth Entrepreneurs, and The Phoenix, 10 students were selected to receive cash prizes for their submissions.  Points were awards based on creativity, feasibility, and mindfulness.  We want to congratulate Clayton and Jarett both for being selected in the top 10 of this competition.  They each received $100 for their entries.

Partnering with industry is always a win-win.  At The ALC we strive to provide students with experiential, professional based learning.  That's why our new Nebo CAPS coursesfully immerse students in a professional culture, solving real world problems, through employer mentorship, all while receiving high school and college credit. CAPS is an example of how business, community and public education can partner to produce personalized learning experiences that educate the workforce of tomorrow, especially in high skill, high demand jobs.
