STRAWBERRY DNA

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

Ms. Hartvigsen's Health Science class got busy extracting DNA from strawberries the other day.

Why would you use strawberries to extract DNA from? The answer is simple. Ripe strawberries are an excellent source for extracting DNA because they are easy to pulverize and contain enzymes called pectinases and cellulases that help to break down cell walls. And most important, strawberries have eight copies of each chromosome (they are octoploid), so there is a lot of DNA to isolate.

The students had a lot of fun and learned a lot.

SHOUT OUT TO MS. HARTVIGSEN FOR ALWAYS COMING UP WITH HANDS-ON LEARNING FOR HER STUDENTS
