SANTA VISITS THE ALC

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

We had a surprise visitor today at the ALC .

He came to read the student's in Mrs. Keetch's class, a Christmas Story.

He was a very Jolly old soul who liked to wave and bellow a welcome " Ho Ho HO" to anyone who walked into the room.

You never know what you may happen across here at the ALC.  There is ALWAYS some kind of hands- on learning activity, even if it is a topic of " How Santa Came to Be and the Evolution of Santa Claus", by history student Brevon Neal, aka, SANTA.

New Teacher Feature- Laurie Hansen

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

We have a new Teaching as A Profession Teacher here at the ALC this year.   Ms. Laurie Hansen has been such an asset to our faculty and we are so glad she is here teaching.

Here is a spotlight from Laurie, in her own words.  So introducing Laurie Hansen:

Just a bit about me!  This year makes 33 years of teaching high school and junior high in Davis, Emery, Carbon and Nebo School Districts.

I have attempted to teach most all the courses in Family and Consumer Science– some more successful than others!

Currently I am teaching Teaching as a Profession 3, a part time job at the Advanced Learning Center.   I also help advise the Educators Rising Student
Organization.

Bone Dissection

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

Brian Blake led students in Anatomy and Physiology through a bone dissection.

Students learned the difference between compact bone, spongy bone and cartilage.

Students were able to see and feel bone marrow , one student saying it felt like butter.

Students learned that bone can bleed and that a hip replacement is actually a femur replacement.

What makes this activity so memorable?

The realization that bone has so many different properties to it.  Such as the type of bone, red marrow and yellow marrow, and cartilage.

It was very interesting to see how the knee joint works and many students said that the thing that stood out the most was the feel of the bone marrow.
