Mr. Barlow's Engineering Classes had a fun challenge last week that they had to complete.

Students were challenged to transport as many Tootsie Rolls as possible, across a cable about 20 feet, across the room while only using a few materials

The students were given  1 Balloon, 1 foot of tape, 1 piece of paper. 2 index cards,  2 paper clips and 3 straws, to build their mode of transportation.

  • Their task was to build a contraption that was self- propelled,
  • No interaction could be used once it was launched,
  • The tootsie roll passengers had to be easy to get on and off.
  •  They needed to be transported safely
  • Only had 30 minutes to come up with a prototype to launch.

The winner would be based on the number of tootsie roll passengers that were transported safely to the final destination.

It was so fun to watch the creative thinking process of the students. They came up with some amazing designs. Some worked well, some not so great, but they would learn by trial and error and get back at it.

The  competitive streak came out in a few teams and it was fun to see them racing the clock to come up with a better design to win.

Sadie Hathaway ended up winning all the classes with her double decker bus holding 18 tootsie people that she safely transported to reach their destination.

 Way to go Sadie.
