How the 2020 Census Affects Children

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

The U.S. Census Bureau has embarked on a nationwide effort to inform everyone living in the United States and five of its territories about the upcoming 2020 Census and to encourage them to respond online, by phone, or by mail.

Everyone counts. The census counts every person living in the U.S. once, only once, and in the right places.

It’s about fair representation. Every 10 years, the results of the census are used to reapportion the House of Representatives, determining how many seats each state gets.

It’s in the constitution. The U.S. Constitution mandates that everyone in the country be counted every 10 years. The first census was in 1790.

ALC/Salem Hills High student recognized on Capitol Hill for service award

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

On Tuesday,  Salem Hills High School senior who also attends the ALC was recognized on the floor of the senate for receiving the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for her service in the community.  This student was Sydney Ward.

Sydney was one of two students in the state to receive the award that honors young people around the country for outstanding acts of volunteerism.

Being recognized on the floor of the senate was fitting for the high school senior, as much of her volunteer work has been done to promote civic engagement in the youth.
