UCAW WEEK (UTAH COLLEGE WEEK) October 5-7th

UCAW week is the week of October 5-7 th.   It is such a fun, planned week for the seniors. Ms. Grant goes to a lot of work to help the seniors be aware and also apply to the colleges the seniors may want to apply for.

The counselor will be going into the English classes of all the seniors to help students apply for colleges.  If your senior is not in our ALC ENGL 1010 course, they will be participating in Utah College Application week back at their home high school either this week or next week.

Wet Mount Lab in Forensic Science

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

Have you ever wondered what a bug looks like magnified? Today in Medical Forensics students learned to use microscopes to see just that.

They learned to use their microscope by looking at bugs.  Wings, legs, bodies, heads, and eyes.

Bugs were brought in by students and then the students chose which body part they wanted to look at and prepared a slide for the microscope.  The bug was viewed on three different magnifications, and students took pictures and were asked to draw what they saw.

Nebo Superintendent Visits The Advanced Learning Center

Submitted by amy.ewell on

The Advanced Learning Center was delighted to welcome Rick Nielsen, the Nebo School District Superintendent, this week.  Mr. Nielsen toured the ALC's high-tech and modern facilities, including our new Auto Collision, Auto Repair, and Woods shops.  Mr. Nielsen is a strong supporter of career and technical education (CTE) and concurrent enrollment (CE) opportunities in a high school setting.

During his visit, Mr. Nielsen was able to visit classrooms, interact with students and teachers, and witness project-based learning on a wide scale.  He even joined in on the fun and signed our CAPS wall.  Mr. Nielsen was truly impressed with everything going on at the ALC.

Thanks for all your support Superintendent Nielsen!

ALC automotive students had the opportunity to travel to the world-famous Bonneville Salt Flats to experience the World of Speed event. They were invited to attend by the UVU transportation technology department who brought their own land speed car (Bombshell Betty) to race out on the salt. While at the salt flats students had the opportunity to interact with some of the racers and see some amazing race car builds, we had the opportunity to watch them race down the salt at over 215 mph as well.  while enjoying cool swag and hotdogs thanks to UVU.Bonneville Speedway is an area of the Bonneville Salt Flats northeast of Wendover, Utah, that is marked out for motorsports.

ATOM, PHOTONS, AND SO MUCH MORE

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

Students at the ALC are learning about Atoms, Photons, Isotopes, Electrons, Orbital Sets, Periodic Table of Elements, Chemical Reactions, and the Anatomage table today.  How many neutrons, how many protons?  No one knows until they complete the lab.  Why can a student drop water onto a penny with a micropipette and the water does not spread, and how do I build an atom with snatoms are all questions students answered in this Chemistry lab for Anatomy and Physiology.  On the Anatomage table, students learned how to make cuts on the cadavers to see organs.  These students are showing just how fun Chemistry and dissecting can be.

Historic Provo Architecture Tour - ALC

Submitted by amy.ewell on

After completing the architectural history unit our ALC architecture students went on a walking tour down Center Street in Provo.  The field trip helped the students identify different architectural styles from the historic homes lining the street.

The Provo City Landmarks Commission states: "Provo’s historic architecture is important as a tangible reminder of the efforts and sacrifices of our predecessors. Rather than building a temporary village, they worked under great physical and financial hardship to create a modern, beautiful city that would be a credit to their community, families, and culture."

ALC Engineering Feat - Geodesic Dome Construction

Submitted by amy.ewell on

I DOME CARE - I LOVE IT!  Mr. Barlow's Engineering classes learned about geodesic domes and structural engineering today at the ALC.  This activity shows how paper built into a dome can create a strong structure that can carry heavy weights.  This dome held 15 lbs in the center!

The ALC offers several exciting engineering courses including:
