High School Counselors take a tour of the ALC

Submitted by preston.powell on

During this months collaboration meeting, our districts high school counselors met to tour the Advanced Learning Center. The counselors were able to see firsthand the labs where students have the opportunity to progress beyond high school levels in college subjects, including computer science, film, digital media, animation, robotics, engineering and advanced health sciences. Throughout the tour, the counselors were able to learn how to best prepare students for classes at the ALC, namely by encouraging them to apply themselves in math, sciences and the arts. Our students are working hard and are doing a great job at the ALC. We appreciate their counselors and the services they provide.

ALC students carve 3D Jack O' Lanterns

Submitted by preston.powell on

Last week students in Mr. Powell's 3D Graphics and Animation class created 3D Jack O' Lanterns in blender software. They used their modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering skills to achieve the desired look for their ghastly creations. The results were spooky! Jack O' Lantern faces ranged from traditional to video game characters. The purpose of the exercise was to introduce the students to organic model techniques. While organic modeling can be difficult the students jumped right in and did a great job!

ALC Films: Swamp Date

Submitted by preston.powell on

This month the students of Mr. Arnold's Advanced Video class took a field trip to the Provo River to shoot their first short film, "Swamp Date." Starring Taylor Curtis and
Madi Swenson, it tells the story of an awkward first date out on the river. Despite rumors of people disappearing in the area, the couple stick with their plans of an afternoon of canoeing. Watch the film to find out what happens!

Submitted by preston.powell on

In my 3D Graphics and Animation class the students are learning how to use Blender, a software package used to create 3D graphics and animation. The first assignment was to model, surface shade (color), and render a Robot using Blender. The students where so excited I had a hard time keeping them focused on anything else. Everyone did a spectacular job! Attached are a few examples.

BUS SCHEDULE updated

Submitted by alan.ashton on

The bus schedule for ALC has been updated again.  The Nebo Transportation Department has been great to work with and we appreciate their continued efforts to make the bus schedule for ALC work or all students who use it.  We are sure that their will be more changes as we increase ridership and have more learning opportunities at ALC.

The revisions this time are for the lunchtime routes for Maple Mtn and Springville.  Bus 05E will take students from ALC to Springville and Maple Mountain, and then the same bus will make the return trip going to Springville and then to ALC.

What is ALC?

Submitted by alan.ashton on

ALC or Advanced Learning Center, is a new Early College & Technical Center serving the Nebo School District that allows students to take advanced classes while staying enrolled in their resident school.    The dual enrollment allows a student to be involved in extracurricular and athletic programs at their resident school.  The slogan, "21st Century College and Career Readiness" defines what the school is all about.  Students who take classes at ALC will be better prepared for college courses as well as better prepared to enter the workforce, having learned critical skills that are a must in an ever evolving global economy.
