Local Pilots tour the ALC Aviation Program

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

On Saturday morning, March 23, eight pilots from the local Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 753 toured the Nebo School District Advanced Learning Center (ALC) Aviation Program. The EAA was originally started as an association of people building their own airplanes and has now grown into one of the two largest general aviation advocacy organizations in the United States.

The Utah County Chapter of the EAA is a very active organization and asked the ALC Aviation instructor Mark Halls to give a presentation about the high school aviation program at their last meeting. It was at this meeting that Mark invited the members to tour the ALC facility and aviation program with eight pilots showing up for a hands-on orientation to the program.

HEALTH SCIENCE CLASSES TOUR WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

Every year at this time, Ms. Grant's health science classes get the opportunity to travel up to Weber State University and tour the Weber Health Science Department.

It is always such an informational, hands-on tour. The students walk away with such a great understanding and knowledge of what Health Sciences has to offer them in the future.

The students were able to work with the virtual reality table and see virtually what it is like to do surgery on a person. They were also introduced to the Nursing simulation lab where they were taught how to intubate an adult and a baby in order to prep them for surgery.  They were also able to see many anatomy parts that had been preserved for the study of tissue and organs.

Retired United Airlines Captain Gaylon Jorgensen presents to Aviation class

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

The Aviation classes were privileged to have a guest speaker come to their classroom the other day. Retired United Airlines Captain and Army US Pilot, Gaylon Jorgensen took time out to come and share his experiences as a pilot with the students. The information he shared was valuable to those students and the response from the students was one of admiration.

Gaylon was born and raised in Rigby, ID where his father taught him how to fly when he was 16. After serving a mission to Denmark, he joined the Army in 1952 and after basic training went to Officer Candidate School, applied for Army Flight School, then graduated as a US Army pilot. He, his wife, and two small sons then spent two years on the island of Okinawa.

ALC / SALEM HILLS STUDENT WINS STATE STERLING SCHOLAR IN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

Amanda Insalaco, one of our students who attends the ALC, won the state’s highest high school academic award last Friday evening. Out over 5,000 high school nominees, and 168 finalists, she was named the 2019 Sterling Scholar in Computer Technology!

When she started her Associate's degree at the ALC, she was excited to learn more about computer technology in graphics, computer programming, and 2D/3D animation. She immersed herself in several 3D computer programs, several programming languages, and learned multiple software applications which allowed her to create 3D models which she rigged for a short film, as well as program a video game.

ALC Celebrates Utah Girls in Tech Day

Submitted by shelley.heaton on

Governor Herbert declared March 20th as "Utah Girls in Tech" day. The ALC celebrated today with the BYU Computer Science department. Angela Rogers and Angela Jones spent time helping the students learn, “How to Train Your Computer.” The girls had a great experience.

We have some amazing girls that represent us in the "Tech World" here at the ALC.

A huge "Thank you", to Angela Rogers, Angela Jones, and Ronda Hair for taking time out of your busy schedules to give the girls who attended this great opportunity.

We appreciate BYU and the expertise they shared with us during our workshop. THANK YOU!
